Minimizing the usage of polythene bags:

Hi friends, disposal of used polythene bags has become a matter of grave concern for authorities because it is neither biodegradable easily nor it can be burnt in the air. Depending upon the density of polythene, it may take many years to centuries to get degraded. As I have mentioned in my earlier blog post, even if we use a polythene carry bag we can reuse it until it becomes useless and finally dispose in a scientific way. More than 80 million metric tons of polythene is being produced every year all over the world and major portion of this huge quantity goes to the production of shopping bags of different qualities and sizes. Since shopping bags are made of low density polythene, they are not strong enough for reuse and thrown unscientifically to dust bins. There are many hazards associated with these bags when mixed with soil such as it arrests or block the entry of rain water below the earth, its toxicity can damage the plants, water as well as soil. Entry of polythene to soil will result in reduction of agricultural yield and reduction in ground water level. In the year 2005, the city of Mumbai was virtually waterlogged due to heavy rain and it was found that choking of drains and sewage by plastic bags was the main reason. As I have mentioned in one of my blog post, I am a disciple of Rishi Prabhakar, founder of Sidha Samadhi Yoga(SSY) and in our daily class we were advised not to use plastic bags for carrying purpose and cloth bags made of old dress were provided to students.

I remember a tragic incident associated with over use of polythene bags which took place few years ago in Kerala state of southern India. One fine morning, one of the temple elephants (owned by the temple for the purpose of temple ceremonies) has become ill and finally died. Unable to find the exact reason for its sudden death, the body was subjected to postmortem and for every bodies surprise there were large number of plastic bags in side its stomach. Pilgrimages who were ignorant about the danger of consuming polythene used to feed fruits and other edible items to elephants along with the plastic bags which ended up with this tragic incident. We are hearing news of banning plastic carry bags by authorities from different parts of the world. In India, Philibit is the first district where use of plastic is banned totally and the credit goes to the then Member of Parliament Smt. Maneka Gandhi, lady who dedicated her life to environmental and animal protection.

Hi friends, continuing my discussion on tips for reduction of carbon foot prints which is nothing but generation of green house gases due to our day today activities, I feel reuse of some of the day today materials should make considerable difference in its generation. Reuse should be a subject which can be debated wherever possible and the need of the hour is to make re use as way of our life. There are many items such as plastic bags, plastic utensils, tinfoil, paper which is used or typed on one side where other side is in a usable condition, using cloths as long as you want and giving them to needy people if you are really fed up with them wearing etc. If you know the gravity of situation with respect to deteriorating environmental health, you should not hesitate to buy second hand materials from the market in spite of your capacity to buy brand new items which are directly made of precious natural resources such as wood. Loss of a tree always results in the reduction of nature’s conversion capacity from carbon dioxide to oxygen. I heard that Japanese adopted the concept of waste to wealth long back which can be adopted by all of us with a multiple view of improving the environmental health as well as our personal financial health. It can’t be a better birthday gift to Mahatma Gandhi!

Hi friends, to day is the birthday of Late Mahatama Gandhi and many people call him as father of our great Nation (but I have got strong reservation about it) and I think all Indians have given a most precious birthday gift to the messenger of truth and non violence. His soul will be the happiest one in the heaven among all and the simple reason is every Indian followed his path of non violence on the crucial day of Ayodhya verdict on 30^th of September. Proving all the all predictions of violence wrong, Indians shown highest level of maturity and all sections of society shown the world that we Indians are also ready to be part of a civilized Global Village. India as an oldest civilization went though some ugly phases in the recent past on the religious ground and I believe Ayodhya verdict provided us an opportunity to count our positive aspects as human beings. Just like a pat on the shoulder of a school boy as an appreciation for his good work, we also got a gentle pat on our shoulder and we want to show more qualities of a civilized society to the rest of the world who were expecting a civil war and blood bath in India. I believe we Indians born on this soil are very lucky to be a part of a very old civilization and our positive aspects are bound to come out one day or the other in spite of many odds in our society. Now it is the moral responsibility of all our leaders both religious and political to encash the good will created in favor of a stronger India where real secularism is practiced. If we proceed in this direction and succeed to devote all our energy to rebuild our Nation which is free from violence, intolerance and above all free from corruption, then it will be a touching tribute to Mahatma Gandhi and a great service to Mother land which comes first and every thing next. The speed at which our population is increasing, we need to concentrate on multi fronts including infrastructure, job creation but we cannot forget the importance of an education system which will make our citizens proud of our country and its heritage but we are still banking on Lord Macaulay’s education system which is aimed at division of Indian minds. Let us prepare now it self to give a better tribute to Mahatama Gandhi on his next birthday.

Hi friends, blogging is my passion and I love to blog about environmental protection related subjects. I strongly believe that, with small changes in life style we can bring positive changes in our biosphere. We need to remember that the present generation is only the custodians of the precious natural resources available in the Nature and it is our moral responsibility to hand over it in good condition to coming generation which includes our own kith and kilns. We cannot afford any further exploitation of Nature and its resources and I am going to discuss some tips in my blog posts which may reduce our carbon foot prints if adopted in our day to day life. Some of the points are known to all of us but it is the need of the hour to adopt them without any delay otherwise it will be difficult to repair the damage. Some of the points which are going to be discussed in my posts may look very insignificant but in totality they will also make huge difference to carbon foot print or green house gas generation. Use of solar energy, wind energy and reforestation are some major steps towards restoration of a healthy environment but small scale effort from individuals can accelerate it.

It is only the beginning of October month and the effect of rising mercury is unbearable in my area. I have written a post observation of a lay man in which mentioned the capacity of Nature to take corrective action during critical climatic changes and hope to see Nature use its hidden power.

Humanity shown by an animal

Hi friends, sad part of human history is that there is a drastic drop in humanity as we grew as a civilized society. The dictionary meaning of humanity is kindness, benevolence or desire to do well to others and this nature is slowly disappearing from us and it is replaced by selfishness. There are many instances of kindness shown by animals particularly by pet animals towards human beings. Today I received an email attachment from my daughter- in- law and friend Varsha Kamath from Bangalore about a rare act of kindness by a monkey. As soon as I opened the mail I thought it is a good idea to make it a blog post. You can see a monkey with two blind persons in a temple in Bangalore.

They were very thirsty and desperately trying to operate the water tap without any success. The monkey which was silently watching the proceedings opened the tap for those disabled persons, allowed them to drink water, also drank some water and closed the tap afterward. If you closely watch the picture, you can observe the eagerness on the face of monkey in helping them. In India we worship various types of animals including monkeys and our association with this animal is very old. In the war of Ramayana, monkeys fought evil forces along with Lord Rama and Hanuman a super ape was instrumental in the defeat of King Ravana. Since then till today Hanuman is worshiped all over India in temples separately as well as along with Lord Rama. This is the gratitude we are showing to Hanuman for helping Lord. In fact, the main deity of RagiGudda Anjaneya Temple where this rare incident took place is Hanuman, the super Ape

Hi friends, this is the first time I am wishing happy birthday to a company and like me millions of well wishers of Google are sending birthday greetings from all parts of the world. Hi friends, I am back to blogging after a very long gap of 96 days and I hope this will be my last disappearance from online activities. Is it integrity?

Hi friends, the word integrity has got many definitions and all of them are holistic in one way or the other. Whenever I use the word integrity either in my conversation or in my articles, I take its meaning or definition as “having sense of honesty and truthfulness in action”. Many times I tried to give a broader meaning to the word integrity but failed miserably. I love the world integrity and want to be honest in all my actions either personal or professional. As a result of stiff competition in all walks of our life where only the fittest will be survived we see a drop in morality. Now, people don’t bother about right or wrong and want to reach their goal by any means. I want to recall an old incident which happened in the year 1976 when I was studying in SJVP College, Harihar town which is situated in Karnataka State (southern part of India). Much water has flown down the River Tungabhadra which is the main source of water supply and power generation in Harihar and in this region of India but I still remember that gathering in our college hall in which a doctor was invited to address us. The doctor was son of a well-known local business man who was born, brought up in Harihar. After completing his Bachelors degree in medicine in a near by medical college he has flown to USA for higher studies in medicine. He became a proud holder of green card of USA. He became part and parcel of US society and used to visit India on a visitors visa very rarely. In one of those rare visits he was invited to our college where he was a student once upon a time. We were curious and enthusiastic to see and hear an America settled Indian but the sad part was he could not address us either in our local language Kannada which was also his mother tongue or in Hindi which is our National language. First he addressed the gathering of both students as well as teachers and he was very proud to talk about America and its culture. After his speech there was a question and answer session in which we were permitted to ask questions about USA and associated things. But before taking any questions he told the gathering in clear terms: “Since I am a citizen of America, I request all of you not to ask me any such question which may not be in the interest my country America. I don’t want to discuss negative aspects of my country and hope you will not cross boundary and embarrass me. It is my duty to uphold the image of my country where ever I go.”

I was totally confused after hearing his statement which was also a warning signal for naughty students who were eager to ask some specific questions about US culture. At the end of the gathering, the US doctor was a relieved person as no body embarrassed him with such questions and at that moment he might be thinking that he has upheld the dignity and image of USA in front of Indians. I thought, as a citizen of US he was always on his toes to protect its interest but whether he was showing same eagerness to protect India’s interest as long as he was its citizen. Before taking up the citizenship of America (for fulfilling his ambitions) whether he has forgotten the naked truth that thousands of rupees were spent on him by Government of India to make him a medical professional. In those years when he was studying medicine, India was counted in poor countries list as 80% of its population was not fortunate enough to have 2 times food and shelter. In spite of its poor financial condition, India never compromised on allocation of grants for professional education. This doctor in question never thought of his moral responsibility towards India and poor fellow countrymen while switching his citizenship but always tried to safeguard his adopted country. I am happy that he has shown his integrity towards USA but I always wonder why he has not shown his integrity while changing his loyalty.

According to data available, 12% of American scientists are of Indian origin, 38 percent of doctors in America are Indians, 36 percent of NASA scientists are Indians, 34 percent of Microsoft employees are Indians and 28 percent of IBM employees are Indians. I think, integrity shown by our countrymen towards USA after embracing its citizenship has made this possible but at what cost? Can India afford this brain drain?

Observation of a layman

Hi friends, as far as knowledge about ecology, environment and meteorology are concerned I am a layman. Since I don’t have any deep knowledge about these subjects, my opinions about them will not carry any weight at any time. But like any environmental scientist I am also equally concerned about the deteriorating environmental conditions especially global warming. As India lies in the so called tropical zone where the ambient temperature will be high for most of the time throughout the year, the effect of global warming can be experienced more than anywhere else. As mentioned, I am not an expert in meteorology but still I am noticing the drastic climatic changes taking place around my place. Soaring mercury level makes our life horrible and experts say that if this trend continues without any break, those days are not very far when there will be no life left on our earth. But I keep my fingers crossed with this environmental issue because a ray of hope is beaming out for us in the form of another climatic change. In the recent years, I have observed a mentionable climatic change which is slowly picking up. Every time when the mercury level goes up very high and it becomes unbearable especially during summer season, a sudden drop of temperature takes place because of instant wide spread downpour. I feel this trend may be the beginning of a corrective action taken by Mother Nature to protect her children which includes all species on the Earth. Contrary to the popular stories about depleting mass of ice in glaciers, some experts say that there is an increase in the ice deposit. Scientists may read different things from these changes but as a layman I feel that we may enjoy cooler days in coming years and our future generation deserve it.

But the need of the hour is to minimize the generation of green house gases and this require a dedicated effort and lifestyle change from all of us.

Hi friends, my journey of blogging or blog walking has given me opportunities to visit blogs of notable personalities of my Great Country. It is indeed a pleasure for me to visit the pages of number Indian bloggers who maintain their blogs on various topics on the earth. With thousands of followers and visitors, her blog is very popular among all sections of our society and as mentioned in her profile page itself, she is a package of "interesting and unpredictable". I found many personal blogs which contain unique posts on special topics and felt these blogs require more publicity as well as encouragement. Indian rituals and routines: Part-3

One of the most common routine practices seen throughout India is greeting each other with a word namaste when two persons meet for the first time in a day. Both palms are placed in front of the chest as shown in the picture while the word namaste is said. You can greet anybody with namaste either he is known person to you or a stranger irrespective of his age. When two persons greet one another with namaste, it is believed that a silent communication take place between inner beings and a good will gets created between two hearts. It is said in ancient Indian scriptures that greeting Namaste is nothing but an act of worship of all pervading supreme power. The persons who know the real significance of greeting namaste will be benefited more in terms of creating positive energy for himself as well as to his fellow human beings where as persons who wish namaste as a social gesture can make more friends for themselves. One can see shade of socialism in each and every rituals and routines which we practice in India and namaste is one of the examples where every individual is treated with dignity and equality. But it is very sad to see that this age old practice is slowly disappearing because of cultural pollution.

One can hardly see any Indian house without a prayer room or alter where all pervading Almighty is worshiped. In spite of the space constrain in side a house; Indians try their best to spare some space where prayers and other spiritual practices are conducted. Positive energy generating activities including repetition of the Lord's name, meditation, reading of the scriptures, prayers, singing of bhajans or devotional songs are practiced daily by family members. With all these spiritual activities the prayer room will be pervaded with positive vibration and the family members who spend time inside the prayer room will have sacred thoughts which results in creation of positive energy. The accumulated positive energy which originated through regular meditation, worship will take care of the negative energy created by human activities.

Since Lord is the creator of entire creation we believe he is also the owner of our house and as a mark of our love and respect to him we keep a room for him. In this way we remain humble even if we posses wealth. We are only earthly occupants of His property

Indian rituals and routines - Part1

Hi friends, continuing my earlier post “We will save the Earth!”, I would like to explain why we do light lamps in our homes in India. Hardly one can see any house in India without a glowing lamp in side the worship room and entrance of the house both early morning and evening; in some houses one can see continuous lighting (not electrical lamp). Even in temples we used to light lamps with different oils including ghee made of cow milk. As a matter of fact every auspicious or religious function starts with lighting of lamp. We believe light symbolizes knowledge and absence of light or darkness is ignorance. The Lord is the "Knowledge Principle" (chaitanya) who is the source, the enlivener and the illuminator of all knowledge. Hence light is worshiped as the Lord himself. Where there is real knowledge, there is no place for ignorance and we believe knowledge is the greatest forms of wealth which one can possess and a knowledgeable human being will never do injustice to mother nature and its creations.

The following Sanskrit prayer will be sung before lighting a lamp, which means I prostrate to the dawn/dusk lamp; whose light is the Knowledge Principle (the Supreme Lord), which removes the darkness of ignorance and by which all can be achieved in life

Deepajyothi parabrahma
Deepa sarva tamopahaha
Deepena saadhyate saram
Sandhyaa deepo namostute

A lamp lit with natural oil or ghee keeps the surrounding atmosphere cool and creates a pleasant spiritual feeling which in turn produces positive energy and sum total of this positive energy may nullify negative energy created by our fellow men.

We will save the Earth!

Hi friends, I am born and brought up in a traditional Hindu family and there are many rituals and routines which are practiced in my home as well as in millions of Indian homes since centuries which I want to discuss here in detail. From early morning to night till we go to bed, various rituals are observed and I believe each one of them add value to our life. These practices are not only means to keep our self healthy and wealthy but allow us travel in a path which may take us nearer to the supreme power which is omnipotent and omniscient. Though these rituals are part and parcel of our life in India and we do practice them holistically, some of us may fail to answer the question - Why you do this?

So, I will answer these questions as posts in my blog and I am proud to do this. We are hearing stories of end of the world in near future (preciously in the year 2012) and the justification given by the propagators of these stories. But I believe the spiritual activities which we practices in our day to day life generate positive energy and spread it in all directions and nullifies the negative energy which otherwise can create havoc. As we all know mass prayer can create miracle in a given day, similarly millions of people practicing spiritual rituals selflessly and silently are adding positive energy to the world and making it safer. After the disastrous Indian Ocean earth quake or Tsunami in the year 2004, there was a meteorological prediction about occurrence of another tsunami in southern part of India and some seashore were isolated as a safety measure. Sea level was rising with violent waves. Under such uncertain conditions, thousands of people gathered on the sea shore of a south Indian village and started chanting “Gayatri mantra” a powerful vedic chant. After few hours of non stop chanting, the sea started showing kindness towards the people who gathered there where as it took more time to recede in other parts. Those people who propagate and justifies the so called 2012 world disaster may become a laughing stock after December 2012. I believe, as long as Indian spiritual power is intact, our world is safe and according to Hindu religious books, our earth will be free of any major disaster for another million years. Indians can save the Earth from disaster through their spiritual activities.

Hi friends, due to personal reasons I am unable to devote minimum time for my blogging activities. Presently I am in Bangalore which is about 300 kilo meter from my place and writing this post as I got some free time. The topic of this post is a movie Avatar- 3D version which I saw yesterday with my son who is working in a software company and I really astonished to see the creativity of the director James Cameron who has took us to the world famous Titanic ship disaster few years ago. I congratulate the whole team of Avatar under the leadership of James Cameron who made us to travel to an imaginary planet Pandora and live dangerously with Nevi tribe along with peculiar animals, birds, flowers and gigantic trees. I think combination of imaginary power of a genius mind and technology is at its peak in this movie. The purpose of writing this post is to share my feelings with my friends and this is not a paid add. I feel I may remember each and every part of this movie for many years.
